Maybe they hold their value well or something, was there supposed to be a link or something?

Probably because they got a lot of luke-warm reviews. Pretty quick, fairly nice car, but the chassis and handling don’t feel like the got quite sorted out; this seemed to be the resounding opinion on them. Of course we know auto journalists are often a fickle and not always the best informed group.
Seems like a pretty solid deal to me. An FR-S/BRZ of the same year and price would have 3x the miles.

In 2013, the R-Spec came without cruise control, for some reason.

That price seems pretty low to me. But they aren’t going to hold their value until Hyundai’s reputation improves among the vast populace that still views Hyundai as making small crapcans. We know that hasn’t been true for a while now, but most people I know that aren’t car folks have a seriously negative impression of Hyundai.

I’ve actually looked pretty hard into these. I realize people say they aren’t the best thing since yoga pants, but the price point and warranty are very compelling.

Because as far as “sporty” cars go, it’s basically purgatory.

350HP, but they pull timing during acceleration. It should be somewhere between a V6 mustang and a 5.0, but it feels slower than that because of the timing thing. Also being balls deep in used G37s for slightly less than that doesn’t help.

Because people aren’t ready to admit that Hyundai make a good car.

I test drove one of these and it felt decidedly un-sporty. Not just like “oh this is a sports car that could use a little refining,” more like “this feels like driving a regular car that happens to be shaped like a sports car.” I’m sure they could be made to drive nicely but out of the box they’re pretty boring.

The lower engine/trim models had it, but it was taken off the R-spec. I think the module was like $350, plus installation.

Why buy a Hyundai when you can have a

? The BMW even comes with a BMW badge, which is worth it’s weight in

Yep, sounds about right from what I’ve read. I’d be curious to drive one, but having an engaging chassis/handling is far more important than the power. Which I think is why the Toyobaru, despite power complaints, seemed to be received better than the Genesis Coupe.

Well they weren’t that expensive to begin with. And consider as well that they’re not exactly flawless:
http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/hyundai/genesis_coupe/#r135145
And while the handling is okay, it’s not as good as something like a BRZ/FRS apparently.
And consider as well that this is competing with V6 Mustangs that have ~90HP more in stock form.

I hadn’t looked at the specs or reviews of these much, but it seems like a stretch to ask it to compete with the FRS/BRZ, it’s wheelbase is 10 inches longer and it weighs a lot more. Seems more like a poor mans Infiniti G37 coupe, to which its size, wheelbase and weight are much more similar.

In a direct numbers comparison, yeah it’s not the same category. But in the real world buying situation, someone looking for a RWD “sports” coupe around $20k, the Genesis and FR-S/BRZ are direct competitors. I’ve seen lots of comparisons of the two for people looking to get an affordable sports car.

In my mind I thought they were closer, and could see how people could cross shop them. I wasn’t trying to correct you as much as just share information about why they offer different driving experiences.

The Coupe R-Spec should have had the Sedan R-Spec’s 5.0L V8

I dont live in new jersey (sorry if my screenname is misleading :P) but even if a Genesis is $15-$17,000 Id question the state of the wear and tear (or if it was a dealer trade). If im not mistaken the track edition has some expensive brakes

I’d say heritage, or lack thereof. Hyundai weren’t known for sports cars then and they certainly aren’t now. New manufacturers, or new niches from existing ones, depreciate fast.
